Bad breath can be pretty embarrassing. However, it is also pretty common. Did you know that one in four people around the world struggle with bad breath every day? If you are that percentage, check out these three tips to help cure your bad breath.
1. Proper Dental Hygiene
Keeping up with a proper dental hygiene routine is definitely one of the first things you should try. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), if you neglect to brush and floss your teeth daily, particles from food can linger in your mouth and ultimately cause bad breath. It will also cause some other troublesome dental issues. Don’t forget to clean your tongue! Cleaning your tongue will decrease your risk of halitosis. Halitosis is chronic bad breath that gives off a very unpleasant smell.
2. Healthy Eating and Drinking
The food we eat is just as important for our mouth as it is for the rest of our body. Avoid foods that are acidic or sugary because they increase the production of bacteria and bad breath. Instead, opt for foods like these:
- Leafy greens
- Proteins like fish, beans, nuts or seeds
These foods also help with saliva flow. If your mouth isn’t producing enough saliva, odor-causing bacteria can develop. So, keep hydrated and drink plenty of water as well.
3. Visit Your Dentist
The best way to conquer your bad breath is to visit the dentist. If you are experiencing halitosis, there is a possibility that there may be some underlying issues. These include:
- Gum disease
- Mouth, nose and throat infections
- Dry mouth
- Smoking and other tobacco products
- Other chronic conditions like gastric reflux, diabetes, kidney or liver disease.
